Human Oversight
Human Oversight Design and Enablement
What this control does
Design systems and deployment guidance so qualified humans can monitor, interpret, override and safely stop high-risk AI.
How to implement
Use this control to connect a provider's oversight design with the deployer's practical ability to supervise high-risk AI.
- Identify the decisions or operations that need human oversight and the skills, authority and support required.
- Define what information overseers need to understand outputs, recognize anomalies and avoid automatic over-reliance on AI.
- Test the applicable options to disregard, override, interrupt or stop the system safely. Assign trained people to those responsibilities before use.
- Record interventions and use the findings to improve the design and instructions. Apply any special requirements for biometric identification or real-world testing separately. A human sign-off that cannot meaningfully challenge the output is not effective oversight.
Suggested timing and triggers
Before release and deployment; on design, role or use changes; during operation and at organization-defined effectiveness reviews.
Evidence examples
Oversight design and role assignments Training, authority and escalation arrangements User-interface tests and safe-stop or override test results Records of interventions, exceptions and follow-up actions Specialized verification arrangements where applicable
How to check this control
Walk through an abnormal-output scenario with an assigned overseer. Check that the person can recognize the problem, access the needed information and intervene within their authority. Trace a real intervention to its recorded outcome where one exists.
